Job Aim
To manage on a shift basis the maintenance, operations and cleaning functions of the Depot and direct the Operations Service Drivers. To ensure trains are maintained cleaned and serviced Safely to agreed standards to meet the operational requirements for both the company and its Customers.

Principal Responsibilities
Lead, support, motivate and direct the maintenance and cleaning teams ensuring a safe working environment. This includes the mandatory completion of accident investigations, fire and safety reports
Direct the Operations Service Drivers activities to meet the requirements of the service and maintenance plans.
Ensure work is performed in a safe and effective manner in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act, GE/RT Network Rail Rule book, Group Standards, Depot Operations Instructions and the company’s Quality, Safety and Environmental procedures and appropriate Vehicle Maintenance Instructions
Manage sub contractors / agency personnel, ensure contractors / agency personnel are aware of and meet their full obligations to existing contracts and carry out their work in a safe manner.
Ensure all personnel maintain effective and documented competence levels through the development of training plans, regular monitoring and audit.
Maintain good industrial relations within the Depot, implementing disciplinary procedures for any serious personnel irregularities.
Identify areas for risk reduction by analysis of train incident reports, industry best practice and complaints initiating action to drive continuous improvement strategies.
Manage operational incidents to minimise disruption to both the company and customers services
Liaise with customer and Maintenance & Operational Control Centre to ensure all work arising is integrated within the shift production plan. Provide necessary feedback and record keeping.
Ensure effective handover between shifts so that the on-coming Service Delivery Manager is aware of all issues and expectations.
Provide performance data on “planned versus actual”, where necessary perform process or quality audits to verify technical or contractual compliance
Ensure that all staff within the team structure deliver and/or receive Team and Safety briefs as and when required.
Ensure all staff participate in Time With Your Manager (TWMY) sessions
Candidate Criteria
At least three years experience in either a supervisory or managerial role with a proven track record of achievement
Preferably educated to HNC Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
Competent in incident management
NEBOSH or IOSH Managing Safely qualified
The ability to communicate effectively and manage poor performance
Good I.T. skills for Word processing, spreadsheets, and similar P.C. based planning and performance management tools
Good financial awareness and effective decision making in an isolated environment where immediate responses are required.
A sound technical knowledge of depot train operations.
A working knowledge of financial and contract management.
Knowledge of other industries best practice would be beneficial.
Ability to delegate effectively.
Undertake workplace inspections for allocated area’s of your site to include Safety, Fire and environmental aspects reporting and correcting all issues raised

You have a legal responsibility for your own personal safety, and that of other staff and members of the public who may be affected by anything you do or fail to do. To meet this responsibility you are required to:
Follow the good examples set by members of the Management Team in creating a robust H&S culture within the Depot ,
Set an example by their own actions and activities
Set targets and objectives for H&S and environmental for their direct staff, use the staff dialogues process for managing H&S and environmental objectives
Ensure that directed personnel are capable and competent to undertake the tasks allocated to them
Communicate and encourage feedback on H&S and environmental issues
Ensure compliance with the Depot Protection Procedure.
Undertake appropriate disciplinary action for any breach of H&S
Investigate accidents or incidents to determine basic causes, feedback information both up and down the organisation
Ensure defined Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for tasks is available and is used by employees
Undertake H&S tours or inspections; take action where deficiencies are observed
When unable to rectify or remedy unsafe situations either stop work if the risk is too high and/or report the deficiency (and involve SQE) to the appropriate member of the Management Team for action
Understand the H&S and environment risks involved in any activity they control and ensure any mitigation designated to control that risk are effectively operated/implemented
Be prepared and be competent to manage any foreseen emergency situations
Become involved in any work safe problem and help resolve that problem
Maintain their competence to manage their own H&S and environmental responsibilities and contribute to their directs competence to manage their H&S and environmental responsibilities
